Walking with the Saints: An Overview of Our Faith Companions

At St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School, the saints are not just figures from history; they are living companions, role models, and friends in heaven who guide our journey of faith. Integrating both Year Group Saints and House Saints into the fabric of school life helps our children see how the virtues of the Gospel are lived out in the real world.

Year Group Saints vs. House Saints

Our school uses a dual approach to saintly devotion to ensure a deeply rounded spiritual education:

Year Group Saints: Every academic year, children dive deeply into the life, struggles, and triumphs of one specific saint. Over the course of their time at St. Peter’s, children will learn about 7 different saints, providing them with a progressive, age-appropriate foundation in Christian virtue and discipleship.

House Saints: In addition to their academic year group, children across the school are split into four house teams, each represented by a prominent saint. This structure provides unique opportunities throughout the year for children across different ages to gather, collaborate, build community, and celebrate collective feast days. The four foundational House Saints are:

  • St. Carlo Acutis

  • St. Oscar Romero

  • St. Josephine Bakhita

  • St. Francis of Assisi

Why Our Children Learn About the Saints

Learning about the saints goes beyond historical facts. For our pupils, it serves three vital purposes:

  1. Relatable Role Models: The saints show children that holiness does not mean being perfect; it means using our unique, God-given talents to love and serve others.

  2. The Power of Prayer: Children discover that they can ask their class or house saint to intercede (pray) for them, building a personal, comforting spiritual habit.

  3. Resilience in Faith: Many saints faced immense poverty, skepticism, or injustice. Studying them equips children with the spiritual resilience to navigate modern challenges.

Their Importance to Us as a Catholic Community

As a Catholic community, our shared devotion to the saints unites us. These holy men and women come from different eras, cultures, and backgrounds—mirroring the beautifully diverse community within our school. They remind us that the call to holiness is universal and inspire us to actively put Catholic Social Teaching into motion through charity, kindness, and daily justice.
