Curriculum Statement
Our curriculum statement defines our ambition for all learners and it reflects the context in which we work with our pupils and their families. We value and celebrate the diversity of our school community in our locality.
Our broad and balanced curriculum seeks to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for life as a responsible global citizen in the 2lst Century and a steward of creation.
Our Mission Statement defines our values and vision for our Catholic identity within our community; we are a learning establishment that ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met, that each child achieves their potential and where each child’s religious development and faith is nurtured. Daily prayer, liturgical celebration and RE are a strong feature of our worshipping community.
We place an emphasis on spiritual, moral, social and cultural development across our curriculum, which promotes the fundamental British values of respect, tolerance, democracy, individual liberty and the Rule of Law. We encourage and celebrate the disciplines of drama, singing and music in our work with the children, as we believe this fosters engagement, enjoyment and confidence.
Our Food Technology programme demonstrates our commitment to the principles of nutrition and healthy eating which in turn supports our Physical Education programme. Our deepest desire for our children to be happy and safe is underpinned by our school’s programme to support Emotional Well Being and Mental Health.
Our curriculum is all that we teach here at St. Peter’s. It is the taught curriculum in lessons as well as the opportunities we give to pupils in assemblies, events and educational visits. It is also the variety of extracurricular activities we provide before and after school.
Children are taught in mixed ability classes with class teachers responsible for planning, delivering and assessing the planned curriculum. Teachers plan a topic based approach to their curriculum to stimulate interest, set a context and ensure that it is relevant and meets the needs of the pupils in their care. ‘Hook Days’ and ‘Assemblies’ are the beginning and end points of each terms’ topic.
Our values and ethos permeate our school curriculum:
· promote our Catholic identity by providing a strong community sense of spiritual, religious, social and moral development through a shared and taught understanding of God our Creator, Jesus our Friend and the Holy Spirit our Helper.
· provide a broad and balanced curriculum which is innovative, creative and relevant, uses up to date technology and develops the progression of skills, knowledge and experiences that will enable our pupils to become confident and independent learners who achieve their personal potential and become valued members of society
· to be fully inclusive and promote equal opportunities and appropriate challenge for all, through an understanding and awareness of gender, ability, social background, ethnicity and faith.
· inspire our learners to become informed, active, responsible citizens who understand, contribute and share an awareness of local, National and Global issues including sustainable travel and environmental awareness.
· actively strengthen the partnership of the home, school and Parish, explore wider links with local business and organisations, build respect and understanding of others and learn from people around us.
Equality within Our Curriculum
Our curriculum at St Peter's complies with our duty described in the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 because our curriculum is accessible to those with SEN and disabilities, which can be seen within our curriculum statement and SEND policy.
